ROTARACT OVERSEAS PROJECT

Gabrielle Nutt has returned from taking part in the most recent Rotaract Overseas Project, Go Gambia, she was part of a team of Rotaractors from Rotaract in Great Britain & Ireland (RGBI) and has come back from The Gambia, West Africa, having completed a highly successful project which brought great advancements for two remote rural villages, Mesira and Sambel Kunda both about 8 hours from Banjul, The Gambia's capital, the whole trip lasted two weeks and as you read on you will see that it was quite a challenge with the heat, the conditions, equipment available and the sheer scale of the tasks involved.

The Task

To provide Mesira, with fresh, clean drinking water for the first time in the history of the village which was founded in 1953. This village now has its own borehole, a water tower with two large storage tanks, solar panels and solar powered pump to deliver the water to six standpipes built around the village. In addition, the ladies instead of walking 3km to the river to do their washing, can now use the washhouse built centrally in the village by the team.

The other village, Sambel Kunda, already had a small clinic but as there were no toilets for the patients waiting area and no enclosure around the clinic, animals constantly fouled the area causing a health hazard. The team built two toilets and a very long wall with lockable metal gates. All the bricks required were made on site and a very deep 7m hole was dug and brick-lined before the toilets were built on top.
